The inspiring story of Mumbai’s Geeta Patil, whose food startup ‘Patil Kaki’ is being appreciated and applauded by the likes of Anand Mahindra.
Entrepreneur and chairman of Mahindra Group, Anand Mahindra, recently took to Twitter to share the inspiring story of Geeta Patil, a home-based food entrepreneur, covered by The Better India in May 2022.
In a tweet posted on 24 June, he praised Geeta Patil for building a business out of her passion for cooking, to support her family.
He retweeted a video featuring Geeta’s story, released on TBI’s social media recently and wrote, “This is the kind of ‘food’ startup that truly deserves a soaring valuation. Because the ingredients are grit & determination. You can’t learn that in Business Schools. (sic)”
“None of the business schools can match the teachings of life,” wrote another Twitter user.

After his tweet went viral, many commented on the post praising Geeta for transforming a small-scale home-based business into a profitable multi-crore venture.
Mumbai resident Geeta Patil inherited her passion for cooking from her mother but never thought that the learnings would come in handy someday. Years later, in 2016, she started her venture Patil Kaki that offers traditional Maharashtrian snacks and sweets at home.
Though she loved cooking, the business idea was born rather out of necessity.
In 2016, her husband Govind lost his job as a clerk in a dental laboratory. This pushed Geeta to use her talents to run the house and support the family.
Thus taking inspiration from her Aai, she stepped up to educate her two children.
She started by making homemade traditional snacks like modak, puranpoli, chakli, poha, chivda and so on with a minimal investment. But it soon turned out to be successful.
Thus from earning just Rs 12,000 to almost Rs 1.4 crore annually, Patil Kaki is now a successful venture serving over 3,000 loyal customers.
Her venture also gives hope to several women whose husbands lost their jobs during the pandemic. About 75 per cent of the workforce at Patil Kaki are women.
