Music is something that unites us all. And if it is a tribute to one of India’s most celebrated personalities, then that certainly pushes things up a notch.

And such a tribute is precisely what music composer and singer Nimish Shah created.

A graduate of the KM Music Conservatory (KMMC), founded in 2008 by the AR Rahman Foundation, Nimish is based out of Mumbai and works on films, ads and other freelance projects.

This Gandhi Jayanti, the young composer decided to make a tribute to Gandhiji in the best way he knew how – a music video.

“Someone approached with a similar request, and that didn’t go anywhere, but the idea got me thinking,” Nimish said, speaking to The Better India.

According to him, it all began with the words ‘Jai Gandhi’, to which he felt a special connection. From there he decided to work on this idea and created his tribute.

Starting from there, he decided to take the old school chant and blend it with electronic and organic sounds – an unusual combination in this form of compositions. “I didn’t want to get into the same alaaps that are common is such creations,” he says.

For this song, Nimish composed the music and made the video, along with providing some of the vocals. The main vocals were by his friend Nimit Luharuka – a family friend and fellow singer.

Interestingly, learning music is still a rare decision in a country obsessed with Engineer degrees.

“My mother was the one who recognised the musician in me quite early on. And since then, I always knew I wanted to be in music. But I pitched an architecture degree to my family initially, to solve the problem of getting a formal degree,” Nimish says. Luckily his father pointed out the obvious – why spend four-five years learning something you weren’t planning on pursuing?

So Nimish attended KMMC and followed his passion instead – always an exciting choice.
