Watch: Hero Cop Single-Handedly Defends Muslim Man From Angry Mob

Policing in India is a thankless task. Often criticised heavily for when things go wrong, a story from Ramnagar in Nainital district, Uttarakhand, is now winning hearts and minds.

Sub-inspector Gagandeep reportedly saved a young Muslim man from a mob in Ramnagar, when the young man was allegedly discovered with a Hindu woman in a temple complex. As per The Lallantop’s report, the incident took place on May 22, when the boy came to meet the girl.

At the temple complex, reportedly frequented by both Muslim and Hindu couples, locals questioned the couple. When they found out that the boy was Muslim, it allegedly triggered an outrage.

Before the police had arrived, a mob of men began roughing up the boy and one of his friends. That’s when, according to the report, Sub-Inspector Gagandeep came to the rescue of a boy who was in danger of being lynched.

In a video going viral on social media, Sub-Inspector Gagandeep is seen confronting a group of angry men all by himself. He is then seen shielding the boy from the angry mob, who are baying for blood. Soon another police officer joins him to keep the mob at bay.

Reports state that there was a lot of pressure on the cops to let the mob go at the boy, but Gangandeep refused to give in to their demands. Instead, the mob closed the temple complex gates and repeatedly attempted to beat the boy, while the girl was seen arguing with the violent men.

According to The Lallantop, the Inspector-in-charge of the area, Vikram Rathod, confirmed that the incident had happened, and the couple were consenting adults.

Irrespective of the politics and communal bend behind the incident, the cop showed exemplary courage and humanity. No one has the right to take the law in their own hands, and Gagandeep has shown the way forward to others in his profession.
