Marks Cards to Papers: Karnataka Education Board Goes Digital to Streamline Process

Now, everything will be digitised, to make it simpler for all involved.

Setting an excellent example for the children it educates, the Karnataka Secondary Education Examination Board, has successfully adopted an eco-friendly practice. They have decided to digitise the process of collating data and issuing hall tickets to Board examinees, who will be writing the Secondary School Leaving Certificate Exam next month.

Going green has had its benefits. The department hasn’t used a single sheet of paper for collecting data. Students don’t have to fill up OMR sheets like they used to, and the Board and school don’t have to go back and forth, for collecting data using OMR sheets and digitising it. A database–the Student Achievement Tracking System, provides the information.

Thanks to this move, around 51 lakh pages for 8.54 lakh candidates have been saved, and according to V Sumangala, the Director of the Board, its expenses have reduced by approximately Rs 45 lakh.

She pointed out that physical labour had decreased as well. Students who lose their admission tickets, can now approach the school, instead of the board. Small changes, like spelling mistakes in the name or subject of the students, can be quickly changed by the school principal, online.

School authorities welcomed the move. D Shashi Kumar, the General Secretary of the Associated Management of Primary and Secondary Schools in Karnataka said that it has saved the authorities a lot of time, eradicated data-duplication, and as a result, streamlined the procedure.
