This Unique NGO in Ahmedabad Is Giving Underprivileged Children a New Life!

Visamo Kids Foundation is a special NGO in Bopal, Ahmedabad, which aims to provide prime education to underprivileged children belonging to families from all over the state.

According to Dr Manjula Devi Shroff, the Managing Trustee of Visamo, “Visamo, is trying to send forth ripples of hope by working with children from disadvantaged families, helping them attain quality education in a wholesome environment.”
In 2001, when Ahmedabad had faced the terror of an earthquake, Dr Shroff had started a camp called Visamo (shelter) to help the families displaced from their homes. In 2002, she decided to take it further and formally set up VKF.

Since then, VKF has focused on empowering lives by facilitating access to quality education and a secure environment for underprivileged children.

To be clear, VKF is not an orphanage—it is a shelter parentage home for children whose parents are unable to educate them due to their financial condition. Therefore, children are chosen by merit alone.

Children admitted to Visamo undergo a stringent selection process to identify the ones who truly will benefit from the quality education.

VKF has partnered with some of the most well–known schools in Ahmedabad (DPS Bopal, Eklavya School, Udgam School for Children) and the kids receive free education in these schools. Some of the schools, apart from providing free education, also support additional costs such as transport, uniform, books, and educational tours.
VKF also has the unique concept of ‘mother teachers’. These teachers hold no degree but regularly come in the evening to talk to the children and ask them about their day, help them with their homework and make them understand concepts that they might not have been able to pick up at the school.
Apart from academics, children are also exposed to extracurricular activities to help shape their personalities.

Volunteers at VSF consist of classical music teachers, and students from institutions like NID and SPIC MACAY, who visit the children to teach them new skills.

The foundation has seen its fair share of success stories. Gaurav Thakur passed out of DPS Bopal and is an ace basketball player who has represented his school in state and national level tournaments. Neelam Sharma passed out from St. Kabir, Naranpura and is currently enrolled at Siddhpur Dental College in Patan, Gujarat.
The contribution of this unique shelter which provides opportunities to underprivileged children surely deserves some good vibes.
