IIT-Delhi, IIT-Bombay & IISc Ranked Among the Top 200 Global Universities

Three Indian educational institutes are among top 200 universities across the world, according to the latest list of the ‘Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World University Rankings’.

Last year, the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT)-Delhi and Institute of Science (IISc)-Bengaluru had featured in the top 200 list.

The latest entry is marked by IIT-Bombay, making it 3 Indian institutions on the global list for the first time.

Making a staggering improvement by jumping 40 positions, IIT-Bombay paved way into the top 200, from a rank of 219 last year to 179 this year, while IIT-Delhi took off by 13 points, from 185 to 172 rank.

IISc however slipped over 38 positions from a rank of 152 to 190, making IIT-Delhi the best-ranked Indian institution in the world.

“The improved ranking is a reflection of the continuous improvement of the quality of education and research at IIT Bombay,” Devang Khakhar who is the Director, IIT-Bombay, told The Indian Express.

The rankings that were released by Quacquarelli Symonds (QS), a British agency that evaluates higher educational institutes under a global spectrum, is based on six performance indices.

These are academic reputation, employer reputation, student-faculty ratio, citations per faculty, international faculty and student ratio. A significant weightage, 40 per cent of the total score, is given to the institute’s reputation.

Even if the overall ranking of IISc might have slipped, there is still reason for the institution to rejoice as IISc was rated as the sixth best institution in the world in terms of QS’s ‘citations per faculty’ metric.

According to The Indian Express, a press release by QS stated that the fact that IISc’s research papers were cited nearly 82,000 times over the five-year period, played a crucial role for evaluation.

Another great piece of news is that 20 Indian institutions have made it to the list of the world’s 959 top universities, with Jadavpur University, University of Hyderabad, Anna University, Manipal University, Aligarh Muslim University and Birla Institute of Technology and Science being the six new entrants.

“India is progressing in our global rankings. Five Indian universities feature among the global 100 for research indicator,” Ben Sowter, Research Director at QS, according to The Indian Express.
