NGOs, Corporates, Citizens Come Together to Help Manipur Flood Victims

InCrisisRelief helped the victims during Assam-Meghalaya flood. The team is back with support for the victims of the current Manipur flood. They have managed to reach out to over 373 households in 12 villages of Manipur and have connected several organizations who are extending their support. Here is how you can help too.

Natural calamities are a litmus test for a community to show the world that it can come together in times of great need and can help each other.

Recent floods across the country, especially in the North-Eastern state of Manipur, were a call for agencies to come forward and help the residents of this beautiful state.

Manipur has nine districts out of which five are in the hills and four in the valley. Floods ravaged the lives of the people in Chandel and Thoubal districts, along with many others in Bishenpur, Churachandpur and Imphal West, after heavy rains lashed at their homes.

As Chitra (@ChitraAhanthem) wrote in rediff,

“The extent of the damage brought upon by the landslide can be gauged from the fact that a rescue team comprising of paramilitary personnel and members of the National Disaster Response Force have not been able to make much headway into the area and have had to return back.”

In these difficult circumstances, providing emergency health relief and aid to the affected citizens has been a real challenge.

However, InCrisisRelief, a voluntary citizens initiative which did commendable work during the J&K floods and Assam-Meghalaya floods last year are now intervening in Chandel and Thoubal districts, with the help of local non-profit organization Diocesan Social Service Society (DSSS), Imphal.

So far, InCrisisRelief, has reached out to 12 villages in both the affected districts. A total of about 373 households have received relief supplies so far and efforts are underway to reach out to as many more as possible.

It is interesting how social media is weaving new collaborations and connecting people with noble intentions to come forward for this cause.

One such story is Sonal, founder of AnybodyCanHelp. She saw one of the InCrisisRelief’s tweet and reached out to them. One thing led to another and she has helped in successfully collecting and sending 3,440 kgs of food, blankets, tarps, medicines, etc. so far. And there is more coming.

Sonal’s collections included food-packs from Stop Hunger. These packs are a mix of dal-rice, used to make a quick meal called Khichdi. Khichdi is not a popular dish in this part of the country. However, InCrisisRelief is pleasantly surprised that these food packs have got a really positive response from the people in flood-affected regions and they are requesting for more of these food-packs.

Till now, InCrisisRelief has forged a cross-sector, multi-stakeholder collaboration with @AnybodyCanHelp and Rotary Worli Mumbai for the relief supplies. Goonj has also partnered with them and are distributing their relief supplies consisting of dry rations, blankets, tarps, etc.

All the supplies from various sources are being transported by Air Asia, Indigo, Spicejet, and GoAir who responded positively and in full support to the SOS calls in these dire circumstances.

Air Asia was the first airline to tie-up with InCrisisRelief and are helping fly the relief supplies from Delhi and Guwahati to Imphal.

Indigo, who had helped InCrisisRelief in the past during J&K floods, is also helping in carrying material from Bengaluru and Mumbai to Imphal. In addition to these two, Spicejet and GoAir have been helping Sonal’s organization AnybodyCanHelp in flying the supplies from Mumbai to Guwahati.
