Use These Plastic Recycling Machines at 10 Mumbai Train Stations and Get Paid for It!

From now on commuters traveling by trains in Mumbai will be able to properly dispose of and also recycle their plastic bottles thanks to the Swachh Bharat Recycle Machine that will be installed in 10 of the suburban stations in the city. And every time they recycle, they will walk away with some form of a reward for a job well done.

The first such machine was set up at the Churchgate railway station last year and has since been a hit with the tens of thousands who traverse the station on a daily basis.

Borivali, Bandra, Dadar, and Goregaon are some of the stations that will soon boast these recycling units.

The machines themselves don’t look much different from standard vending machines and are as big as basic refrigerators. The user has to feed an empty plastic bottle into the machine and it will be processed and then crushed. It will later be recovered and recycled. Once the bottle is slotted, the user also gets a reward in the form of discount coupons from Sahakari Bhandar and Reliance Fresh Stores. They can also opt for Paytm credit points or choose to donate the equivalent money.

The machines have been provided by Wockhardt Foundation, an NGO that works primarily to empower the underprivileged. The trustee and CEO of the foundation spoke to Mumbai Mirror saying that projects like these help curtail the problem of untreated waste in India. He said, “With the amount of untreated waste growing at an alarming rate, recycling solutions like the Swachh Bharat recycle machine becomes extremely important. Through the Swachh Bharat Recycle machine, we aim to become a global green citizen, committed to recycle every PET bottle that is thrown into the waste and goes untreated.”

The plastic that gets accumulated in these machines will be sent to fibre manufacturing companies once they are treated. They will then be used in the manufacture of clothes or grocery bags or similar items.

So, the next time you see one of these in Mumbai, you know what to chuck at them. It just might save the planet.
