Educators up to the Mark? School Students in India Might Soon Be Evaluating Their Teachers!

It is an unfortunate truth that the government schools in India sometimes fall well below the standards compared to private schools in terms of infrastructure and the quality of education. Now, with the hope of keeping the staff accountable, the centre is pressing state officials to come up with a new format where students can evaluate their educators.

According to a report in the Hindustan Times, an official has confirmed that there is a plan in place to implement a new set of questionnaires through which students can evaluate the quality of education. The official said, “The idea is to find out what students think about the way they are being taught. Rather than asking them questions, we are developing a system with a set of questions that will be distributed among students to rate the teachers.”

Currently, there are over a million government schools and yet many lack basic facilities and infrastructure that private schools provide. And yet, children across the country depend on them as their only source for education.

The official, who has spoken under the condition of anonymity, notes that with this new system, there might be more transparency. It comes with a reward system wherein teachers who are rated highly get recognised and the ones who don’t are given a chance to improve.

Separately, teachers will also be evaluated based on students’ performances. But the assessment will not be based solely on the students’ marks but also their critical thinking skills.

Right now, the model will be implemented only in select states to verify its feasibility and it will be for students in Class 5 and higher. The pilot programmes will be launched from this academic year.
