Madurai Hotels to Compost Waste, Grow Organic Vegetables for Self-Use!

While many hotels across the country have gone green and implemented various measures to conserve resources, Madurai has gone one step forward.

Major hotels in Madurai, in association with the Madurai City Corporation, have recently launched a green initiative to recycle their waste and use the manure to cultivate vegetables, which will be used in the hotels.

This is one of the first such initiatives in the country.

K Thirupathi, managing director, K T Greens, said that it was in 2015 he had decided to recycle the waste generated by hotels in the city, as the clean India movement was given a push throughout the country. People were asked to segregate their waste and also implement solid waste management units on their premises as reported by Times of India.

While initially only three hotels came forward, today 30 of the city’s hotels are on-board and ready to implement these ideas. The 2.5 acre compost and recycling yard has been set up on the outskirts of the city on the Madurai-Melur highway.

The composting yard project, called the ‘smart, clean, green, Madurai’ was established at a cost of Rs 55 lakh, in 5.5 acres of land belonging to the Madurai Corporation.

Fitted with a high tech accelerated composting machine, the vegetable wastes are collected by the composting yard, using their own vehicles on a daily basis. The hotels have to pay Rs 6,000 a day for waste management. “They get organic vegetables. This is a negligible amount,’’ said Thirupathi to the publication.

It is heartening to see more and more cities work towards ensuring the betterment of the city and provide better resources and infrastructure to its residents.
