Attention Railway Job Seekers! Recruitment Processes May Soon Be Sped Up!

Attention Indian Railway job seekers, we come bearing good news this festive season!

Following a meeting with Railway Board Chairman Ashwani Lohani, where zonal heads brought the issue of being understaffed to light on November 24, the Railways may soon speed up its recruitment process reported the Financial Express.

Unlike the process followed earlier where the country’s transport giant’s recruitment process took over two years to make appointments, the Railways will soon complete its hiring process within six months from the date of announcement of applications.

The Indian Railways recruits employees in four categories including, Group A, B, C and D.

While Group A posts are recruited by UPSC through Civil Service Exam, Engineering Service Exam, and Combined Medical Service Examination, Group ‘B’ is linked to Section Officers Grade and usually includes promotions Group ‘C’ railway employees get on a deputation basis.

Group ‘C’ Posts include non-technical posts like clerks, assistant station masters, ticket collectors, train clerks, commercial apprentice, traffic apprentice, etc. and technical posts in fields such as civil, mechanical, electrical, signal and telecommunication, etc.

Group ‘D’ Posts include rackmen, helpers, assistant points men, safaiwala/safaiwali, gunman, peons etc.

Currently, the Railways has 225,823 openings in Group ‘C’ and Group ‘D’ categories. It also has over 1,22,911 vacancies in safety categories and 174,64 posts in the loco department which ranges from different profiles including drivers, guards, gangmen and other technical staff.

It also has over 6150 vacancies across Northern, South-Eastern, North Central, South East Central, Central, West Central, South Central, Eastern, Southern, North-Eastern and East Coast Railways.

One of the plans of action being considered to speed up the process of hiring is the introduction of online tests.

“The process of recruitment takes too long, taking almost two years since submission of application. Many candidates get alternative jobs, leading to the poor materialisation of indents (vacancy notice). With online tests etc. the process should be speeded up,” general manager of Northeast Frontier Railway Chahatey Ram suggested in the meeting in the presence of 17 GMs says the report.

The Railway Recruitment Board has directed all the departments to submit their respective proposals with a deadline of December 20.

Currently, the Railways has over 1.4 million employees who are responsible for the working and maintenance of India’s 66,030 km of tracks, 10,773 locomotives, 63,046 coaches and 2.45 lakh wagons.
