With a No-Plastic, No-Waste Wedding, this Couple Played Their Part in Kerala’s Green Protocol

Kerala has been one of India’s most progressive states, and has been a leader in addressing social issues – be it women empowerment, literacy, unique public-private partnerships etc. It is no surprise that Kerala is at the forefront in addressing environmental challenges as well. The introduction of the Green Protocol is one step towards that.

Inspired by the state government’s emphasis on eco-friendly practices, Arun and Anju Anirudhan, a couple from Kerala, decided that their D-day too would practice the ‘Go Green’ philosophy.

Arun and Anju ensured a sustainable approach in every aspect of the ceremony. From stage decorations and food to the garlands for the couple, eco-friendly and non-polluting materials were incorporated in abundance, reports NDTV.

Plastic and disposable crockery and cutlery were replaced with reusable varieties and floral decoration was substituted with coconuts and fruits.

Speaking to NDTV, the couple said, “Usually wedding affairs create lot of harm to the environment, we wanted to avoid that. When there is a wedding, one will see large amounts of plastic waste littered in every corner of the venue or house. As a couple, together we decided to change this practice and promote the idea of eco-friendly wedding.”

Indian weddings are known for their grandeur and extravagance, which unfortunately comes at the cost of high carbon footprint.

Fortunately, Arun and Anju were on the same page about hosting a conscious wedding, and found support in their family too.

As Arun is a government official, the wedding was attended by the likes of district collector Veena N Madhavan and G. Venugopal, the District Panchayat President, Alapuzha who applauded the eco-friendly ceremony. Speaking to India Today, Venugopal said, “If everybody follows the direction, the waste management would be more effective and marriages generate tons of bio-degradable and plastic wastes.”
