The New Organic Farm at ISB Has Become an Unlikely Stress Buster for Its Students

The students and the staff of Indian School of Business (ISB), Hyderabad, have found a new stress-buster. They have gone green. And in the process they are also enjoying the perks of a healthy and organic diet.

Confused?

Through a new initiative called ISB Goes Green, the institute has brought organic vegetable farming into its campus. Through this programme, those within ISB have not only been learning the nuances of farming but have also become active participants in the process of growing the veggies in the in-house farm. And every week, the institute also gives them the opportunity to buy these vegetables at discounted rates.

The idea of the farm was first envisioned by S. Venkadesan, head of operations and learning resource centre, ISB, who notes that he had always been interested in gardening since his own childhood. He realised that the spacious campus allowed for an opportunity to start a small farm. Hence, along with like-minded individuals, he went about setting up the farm and enlisted the help of farmers to learn the tricks of the trade.

With 4,000 yards at their disposal, the core team set up a farm that now grows a number of vegetables, including carrots, coriander, spinach, radish and more.

Speaking to Deccan Chronicle, he says that given the produce is fresh and organic, the taste is also significantly better than the usual fare one would find in a market. He notes, “Since we do not use chemical fertilizers and pesticides, the flavour and aroma of the food is incomparable. We don’t give away the produce for free because we want people to feel like they’ve earned it. I’ve cooked spinach, radishes and carrots from the farm — they were delicious! They stay fresh for almost a month, even when not refrigerated.”
