22 Satellites in One Mission – ISRO Creating History Again

Indian Space Research Organization is all set to create history again by launching a record number of 22 satellites in a single mission – the highest number for ISRO so far.

Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle, PSLV C34, which will carry India’s remote sensing satellite Cartosat 2C, will also have 21 other satellites to be injected into the orbit.

These will include four micro-satellites weighing 85 to 130 kg each and 17 nano-satellites weighing 4 to 30 kg. 18 of these satellites are being launched for foreign agencies including US, Canada, Indonesia and Germany. Two of the nano-satellites have been developed by the Pune Engineering College and Sathyabama University, Chennai.

The micro-satellites include:

• Maritime Monitoring and Messaging Microsatellite (M3MSAT) of Canada, to be used for collection and study of automatic identification system signals from low earth orbit.
• LAPAN A3 of Indonesia for earth surveillance and magnetic field monitoring.
• German satellite BIROS meant for remote sensing of high temperature events.
• SKYSAT Gen2-1 from the US that will be used for earth imaging.

“We are planning to launch as many as 22 satellites on board PSLV C34. We had earlier sent 10 satellites on a single mission. Now, we are planning more than double. We hope that the launch will be in May,” said ISRO’s Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC) Director K Sivan.

The satellites will be launched from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota. Prior to this, NASA had set the world record by sending 29 satellites in a single launch in 2013.
