True Hero: Meet The Delhi Cop Who Risked His Life to Save A Drowning Child

True Hero: Meet The Delhi Cop Who Risked His Life to Save A Drowning Child

Bravery is not something one is born with, but what one chooses to do when pitted against a difficult situation.

Constable Rajkamal Meena, who is currently posted in the Khyala Police Station in New Delhi, exemplifies this statement.

On Saturday, February 2, 2019, the Constable was out and about on work when he spotted a child drowning in the deep waters of the Bawana Canal.

His fearlessness and quick thinking ensured that the child survived.

Speaking to The Better India about the harrowing incident, he said, “I was working on a case, and we were preparing for a raid in the area when I saw a bunch of children playing around the canal. That place is known to be unsafe, and I wanted to warn them, but before I could do so, one of the boys jumped into the water. He couldn’t swim, and by the time I reached, he was already drowning. So, I instantly jumped into the canal to bring him out of the water. Had I been late by even a few seconds the boy would have died.”

The Bawana Canal is located in West Delhi, and this is not the first time that such an incident has occurred there.

In May 2018, two engineering students were sitting on the bank of the canal when one reportedly slipped and fell into the water. The other jumped in to save his friend, but unfortunately, both of them drowned.

Thankully, this 11-year-old boy did not meet a similar fate. Constable Rajkamal managed to drag him out and immediately performed CPR to save his life.

“I pushed hard to get all the dirty water out of his system. His family was also called, and they took him to a hospital,” he added.

However, the water which was extremely cold at the time of the day ended up causing him harm as well.

Inspector Ashok Kumar, the Station House Officer (SHO) of the Khyala Police Station said, “After saving the child, Constable Rajkamal also fell sick due to infection, and was immediately hospitalised at the same health centre.”

Applauding his selfless deed, DCP West Delhi, Monika Bhardwaj also tweeted, “Brave constable Raj Kamal Meena of PS Khyala saved the life of a boy drowning in Bawana Canal. Rajkamal went to Bawana for a raid, but when he saw the child drowning, he jumped in the canal to save him. Proud of Ct Rajkamal.”

The Constable wears this praise lightly. “I am no hero. It is not just my duty as a civil servant, but also my dharma as a human being, to help the other in need, and I did just that,” he said.

This incident comes as a positive change during a time when the police force is facing intense criticism across India for various issues. We hope that it inspires many more to become heroes, in the near future!
