Own a DTH? SC Judgement on TRAI’s Tariff Order Will Make Your Monthly TV Bills Cheaper!

The person who will perhaps be the happiest today is my grandmother. She will finally be able to watch all her mega-serials on television without the fear of a blackout. In the ongoing tiff between broadcasters and the DTH cable operators, those who suffered the most were the consumers.

Therefore, calling this a big win for the consumers is by no way an overstatement.

The Supreme Court has upheld the Madras High Court’s order, which said that the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) is within its powers to fix tariffs at which broadcasters offer channels to DTH and cable operators, as well as the latter to consumers.

There has been an ongoing tiff between broadcasters and the DTH and cable operators, and this order will finally put that to rest. One of the key reasons why this order is being celebrated is because it brings in much-needed transparency, protecting consumer interests.

TRAI chairman R S Sharma told the Business Standard, “It is a historical judgement in the sense that this is a big win for consumers of television services in our country because it provides them (with) choice and transparency. They will be able to get whatever channels they want to subscribe to, and will not be unnecessarily pushed some other channels.”

ZEE and Essel group chairman, Subhash Chandra, in a report published in Indian Television, said, “The SC order has empowered consumers across the nation. While the overall media and entertainment landscape has been evolving rapidly, it is for the first time in 26 years that such a strong, positive step has been taken (to) eradicate the lack of transparency in the cable and broadcast value chain.”

Ranjan Gupta, President, All India Digital Cable Federation (AIDCF), said, “This is the watershed moment we have all been waiting for. We feel that the new framework will bring in much-needed transparency, parity, promote exercising of choice for the consumer and ensure orderly growth of the sector.”

All in all, this order has sure made viewers across the country very happy.
