This ‘Holiday Homework’ for Parents Is Going Viral for All the Right Reasons!

Recently, a school circular about holiday assignment for parents became viral across the country that essentially entails them to involve themselves in a string of developmental activities for the benefit of their wards, in order to make them more aware and sensitive towards the society and different professions.

Interestingly, before this Chennai-based institution’s circular won hearts over the Internet and was widely appreciated for its holistic approach of educating kids, there was another school in Kerala’s Alappuzha that had originally penned down these holiday homework ideas two years back.

It is believed that the Chennai school had taken inspiration from the list of activities ideated by Usha Venkatesh, principal of Brightland Discovery preschool in 2016, which had also created a similar furore with people calling and congratulating the seasoned educator from across the world.

“Have at least two meals together with your children. Tell them hundreds of people work hard to provide you a meal. Let the child understand the importance of agriculture and hard work of people in the fields. Let them wash their own plates after every meal. Children learn the dignity of labour from such habits.”

These are the first two tasks in the  list, which also sheds light on various important values and life lessons that families are sadly losing out as we inch towards a more technologically advanced lifestyle.

Besides asking parents to enlighten their kids about the sweat and blood that goes in each profession, the circular also directs parents to incorporate the same about their own professions by taking children to their workplaces.

This way, the children will be able to better understand their parents’ hard work in supporting the family.

From sharing stories from one’s own childhood to helping kids build a good rapport with their neighbours, the school administration aims to directly involve parents in the emotional and psychological growth of their children as better human beings who are socially conscious towards their family, society and the planet.

Amidst all the fun activities, the school hasn’t forgotten its basic tenets and has made sure to involve some learning too. “Learn five new English words daily and list them in a book,” lists the circular.

Lastly, the circular concludes on an important note for the parents, which asks them to celebrate their children and be grateful for their existence.

“Look into their eyes of your little ones, thank God for giving you one- which is a wonder of nature. You are only a temporary custodian. In a short while, she/he will be soaring to heights where you have no role to play!”
