Odisha Boy Does State Proud, Tops GATE 2018 in Agricultural Engineering!

Success, when celebrated, feels even more special. Jyotiranjan Barik, a student of the Orissa University of Agriculture and Technology (OUAT), has topped the national level test in the Agricultural Engineering subject with an overall score of 959.

Currently a fourth-year student at OUAT, Jyotiranjan was certain that he would qualify, but the results came as an unexpected bonus. He says, “This was my first attempt, and I did not expect to top the exam. I was sure of qualifying though. When my friends told me about the result, I could not believe it,” reports the Times of India.

The Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) is an examination that primarily tests the comprehensive understanding of various undergraduate subjects in engineering and science.

GATE is conducted jointly by the Indian Institute of Science and seven Indian Institutes of Technologies at Roorkee, Delhi, Guwahati, Kanpur, Kharagpur, Chennai (Madras) and Bombay on behalf of the National Coordination Board-GATE, and Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Human Resources Development (MHRD), Government of India.

What is really interesting to note is that Jyotiranjan scored 80.5% in his Class 12 exams. The reason this is interesting is that in a day and age where there is enough and more pressure on students to secure marks that are upwards of 95%, it is a refreshing change to see Jyotiranjan doing so well despite not getting such marks in his board examinations.

How, then, did this boy manage to secure the first rank in the GATE examination?

He says, “I don’t study much. Every day, I would keep at my books for around three to four hours. I did not go to any coaching centre. I think classroom lectures were quite helpful.”

He has already decided what he wants to do next. “I want to pursue research, and one of my goals is to clear the Junior Research Fellowship. I think I will pursue an MTech in soil and water conservation from IIT Kharagpur,” he added, as reported by the publication.

The key to success is perhaps diligence and working towards a clear goal.

Chief Minister, Naveen Patnaik, and Union Petroleum Minister, Dharmendra Pradhan, took to Twitter to congratulate Jyotiranjan on his exceptional scores.

This just goes to prove that nurturing talent and supporting it, will always yield great
results.
