Why Was This Mangaluru Cop Awarded for Creating a 20-Minute Traffic Jam!

Why do traffic congestions occur on a day-to-day basis?

A greater number of vehicles than the road’s capacity, one vehicle’s wrong judgment or sometimes even accidents, all result in traffic jams where there is no mobility for long periods of time, and everyone loses their mind, leading to utter chaos all around.

However, the 20-minute traffic block that occurred on the road at Bunts Hostel Circle in Mangaluru on Thursday has a completely different story, and it is quite awe-inspiring!

Traffic constable Revanna Siddappa stopped all vehicular traffic to fix a protruding metal rod on the road himself in the morning. Only a day before, one man had been almost run down by a bus after skidding from his bike that had hit the rod.

The incident led the 25-year-old cop to act immediately before the dangerous protrusion could claim any lives.

Interestingly, the metal rod had been jutting out of the road for months and was completely overlooked by the local municipal bodies, before Siddappa decided to take up the reins of correcting the situation and hammered the rod into the road. His intervention was hailed by the onlookers, out of whom, one even took a video.

“I was quite inspired by what he did, and shot a video to show it to others,” said Rajesh Raj, a salesperson from a store nearby to The New Indian Express.

Soon enough, the video went viral after being posted on social media, and when Siddappa woke up from his afternoon break, he was surprised to see several missed calls on his phone, and was even accosted by reporters!

However, Siddappa’s initiative to fix the road that went beyond his role of a traffic constable wasn’t overlooked by his department. In recognition and appreciation of his decision, he was awarded a cash prize of ₹5000 by TR Suresh, the Police Commissioner of Mangaluru, on Friday.
