Members of the transgender community in India have undergone countless trials and tribulations throughout history. A film titled “Mr. Nangai,” directed by Ashwin Kumar, examines the the plight of these people who represent the third gender, in a light which is tinged with harsh reality.

While in the Mughal era “eunuchs” were active members of the court, and in some sects, transgenders were likened to the half male form of the Hindu god, Shiva.

Today, many members of this community face brutal conditions, and have resorted to begging on the streets, or sex work. “Mr. Nangai” explores the harsh realities of a world which the average Indian has never been a part of.
