To Crack Down on Fake Licences, Centre Now Asks You to Link Your Aadhaar
The linkage of the Aadhaar Card to the Driving Licence will streamline processes, says the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways
In a move to slowly obliterate fake licences, the government is in the process of linking driving licences with Aadhaar numbers and is preparing a software for this purpose. It informed the Supreme Court about this, today.
A bench comprising Justices Madan B Lokur and Deepak Gupta was told about it by a court-appointed committee on road safety headed by former Supreme Court judge Justice KS Radhakrishnan.
The committee, in its report to the top court, said that it had held a meeting on November 28, 2017, with the Joint Secretary of Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH), to discuss several issues, and one of them was how to deal with fake driving licences.
The report also mentioned that the National Informatics Centre is preparing a software ‘Sarthi-4’ under which all licences will link to Aadhaar. The software will cover all the states on a real-time basis, and it will not be possible for anyone in India, to get a duplicate or fake licence, according to the report.

Another meeting between the panel and the MoRTH was scheduled, during the 22 and 23 February 2018, to discuss the compliance of the apex court’s directions, given earlier.
Additional Solicitor General Pinky Anand, representing the ministry, told the Bench that as compared to 2016, road accident fatalities in India, came down by around 3%, in 2017.
The committee had asked all states to set up a road safety fund and ensure that a significant portion of the fines collected from traffic violations are diverted to the fund so that it has a steady flow of cash.
