Delhi’s Cops Go Cosmopolitan: To Recruit Personnel From Across the Country

Delhi’s Cops Go Cosmopolitan: To Recruit Personnel From Across the Country

The Delhi Police is all set to become India’s first cosmopolitan police force. According to The Indian Express, it will appoint over 7,000 personnel from across the country. Officials in the department claim that this idea is the brainchild of Police Commissioner Amulya Patnaik.

Last year, the police force conducted recruitment drives from all States and Union Territories. Approximately 17.8 lakh people had applied, and 1.9 lakh passed the physical test. These tests were conducted in consonance with other state police forces.

All the 7,307 vacancies are for the post of constables, who form the first line of engagement with the average citizen. Of the 7,307 vacancies, 2,424 are reserved for women.

What was unique about the recruitment drive was the greater participation of women, who applied from states like Jharkhand and Chhattisgarh.

Earlier, the police force would only recruit from within the city of Delhi. A significant percentage of those recruited, thus, were primarily from Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, and Rajasthan.

Only on one previous occasion was the Delhi Police ordered to recruit from other states. In 2015, after a spate of racially-motivated attacks in the city, BS Bassi, the then Delhi police commissioner, had written to the police chiefs of the eight northeastern states and requested them to send aspiring recruits from their region to be inducted into the capital’s police force.

“The basic idea behind this new kind of recruitment drive is to make our force cosmopolitan. Delhi is the national capital, and people from all parts of the country come here to earn their livelihood. If our force has personnel from each of the states, they can act as the interface between these people and the force,” said Special Commissioner of Police (Headquarters) R S Krishnia to The Indian Express.
