16 Cyclists, 1000kms & One Goal – to Raise Funds for Underprivileged Girls

How far can you go for education? Over 16 cyclists on December 5, embarked on 1000 km trip to prove their passion towards educating underprivileged girls in Hyderabad’s slums.

Ummeed 1000, championed by these 16 cyclists, kickstarted from RBL Bank in Madhapur and will reach its culmination on December 15, after they have cycled 1,000kms to reach Vishakapatnam.

These cyclists aim to raise funds for underprivileged girls studying at Udbhav School in Rasoolpura in the slums of Hyderabad.

The launch of the Hyderabad Metro Rail has developed a constant fear in the minds of the school authorities at Udbhav of being asked to vacate the property. This fear stems from the belief that Rasoolpura station is only half a kilometre away from the school and the property prices will soon start skyrocketing due to its vicinity to the metro.

The two buildings that the school houses on its campus for underprivileged students since 2006, are on rent. The authorities are concerned that they will not be able to afford the landlords’ demand for higher rents once the property value rises and will be asked to leave.

Also, the school cannot consider shifting to an alternate location, because the parents of these underprivileged girls are already struggling to make ends meet. Transportation costs will only add another unfair financial burden on them.

Speaking to EdexLive, Jasmeet S Gandhi, shared that the major challenge for the participants is fundraising, not cycling.

“But our mission is to inspire everyone to do what they can. We are passionate about education so we try to drive home the message of its importance,” he said.

We salute the spirit of these bankers who donned their athletic vests to raise funds and empower these kids to beat poverty through education!
