1 Village, 10000 Weaving Families & the Rise of Pochampally Sarees on India’s Silk Map

#thebetterindia

10,000 Weaving Families, 1 ‘Village of Silk’. Let us take you to the unique village of Pochampally which won the ‘Best World Tourism Tag’ from UNWTO.

So what draws tourists to this remote village?

Is the sheer craftsmanship that goes into creating the exquisite Pochampally sarees.

Here looms are more than just tools; they are the very soul of the village.
Ultrafine silk threads are mounted on these looms for the painstaking 18-step process of weaving.

The designs are drawn, and the threads are dyed to create the geometric identity of the GI-tagged Pochampally Ikat.

But what truly sets Pochampally apart is its unwavering belief that no machine can match the heart & artistry in each creation.

And guess what?

There’s no middleman in this narrative; most weavers have their own shops, selling sarees woven by their families.

Some even have an online presence.

The craft has revitalised local communities, offering not just employment and improved lives, But a deep sense of cultural identity; Making Pochampally not just a story of artistry, but a story of empowerment.

Fitting for the village from where Vinoba Bhave once launched the Bhoodan movement!
