This 25-Year-Old From Rajasthan Just Became BSF’s First Female Combat Officer

Tanushree Pareek has made history by becoming the first woman field officer of the Border Security Force. This is the first time in the 51 years that BSF has existed that a woman has been commissioned to be part of the border protection force, known to be the world’s largest.

The weight of the occasion was not lost on the 25-year-old native of Bikaner, Rajasthan, who led the passing out parade of the 67 trainee officers at the Border Security Force Camp at Tekanpur. She has now been posted to command a unit at the India-Pakistan border in Punjab.

Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh, who was present at the convocation ceremony, spoke about the historic occasion, commending Tanushree and urging other women to follow suit. He has been quoted by India Today as saying, “I am happy that BSF gas got its first woman field officer and hope that many more women will join her in securing our borders.”

The home minister was at hand to personally put the ranks on the shoulders of Tanushree at the ceremony.

BSF started allowing women to be inducted in its ranks in 2013.  Along with the other trainees, Tanushree, completed an intense 52-week training programme that included becoming conversant in intelligence gathering and battle craft, among other things. She had been selected after successfully taking the UPSC examination in 2014.

The BSF, that was started in 1965, has a total of 2.5 lakh men (and now one woman) serving to keep our borders secure. It is primarily tasked with keeping the borders along Pakistan and Bangladesh safe.
