Nagrota Attack: How the Bravery of Two Army Wives Averted a Major Hostage Crisis

A terror attack at the Army Base in Nagrota, early morning on Tuesday, killed seven army personnel including two officers and five jawans, and has injured eight others. But the attack could have been a lot worse if it wasn’t for the bravery of two army officers’ wives.

These women showed immense bravery and presence of mind during the encounter when the terrorists tried to enter their quarters.

According to a report by NDTV, the two women were inside their quarters with their newborn children at the time of the attack. They blocked the entrance of their quarters with all household items and didn’t let the terrorists break into the houses.

The three heavily-armed terrorists had disguised themselves in police uniform. They entered an army unit located about three km from the headquarters with the intention of entering the family quarters where they would take the families of soldiers and officers hostage.

“The wives of the two army officers, who were on night duty when the encounter broke out, displayed exemplary courage as they blocked the entry of their quarters with all the household items, making it difficult for the terrorists to break into the houses,” an army officer told PTI.

Defense spokesman Lt Col Manish Mehta said that the situation was quickly brought under control and the women along with their infants were successfully rescued. The militants were killed in an operation that lasted nearly 14 hours. A high alert has been declared across the state now, including on the Jammu-Srinagar national highway.
