Did you know that over-the- counter sale of acid is illegal? Here are some related laws you should know about.
Since 2013, strict laws have been enforced to curb acid attacks. The Supreme Court states that over-the-counter sale of acid is completely prohibited unless the seller is a registered seller. Norms also state that acid can only be sold to individuals who are 18 and above, and only if they furnish their contact details as well as the purpose for purchase.
Sellers must declare their inventory of acid to the sub-divisional magistrate within 15 days of purchase. A fine of up to Rs. 50,000 will be imposed on the seller if these rules are broken.
Acid attack survivors and activists are now running a sting operation called ‘shoot acid’. They are visiting stores suspected of flouting rules in the sale of acid. The collected video evidence will be used to prosecute perpetrators and will help check the sale of acid
A counter attack to over-the- counter crimes!
