Soon, You can get the Police Verification for your Passport done Online

For all the people waiting to gain access to a passport, there is good news. Police verification is all set to become an online process. Here is all you need to know about this.

Gaining access to a passport has always been a matter of strenuous hard work. It requires a fair amount of running around (literally) and sometimes, even then, the delay and wait before receiving that passport in your hand, is never-ending. Fortunately, there is one major aspect which generally holds up the issuing of passports – police verification, which is set to go online. Here are the salient features-

1. This shall be applicable for both, new passports and the renewal of old passports.

2. This is in hope to cut down the period of wait for accessibility from the current 20 days to less than a week.

3. All SP-level police officers will be permitted by the home ministry to access directories which are relevant for verification of living proof, criminal history if any, and identity.

This will include access to database, such as, National Population Register (NPR), Aadhaar Card and Electoral Photo I-Card. This shall be done through the Crime and Criminal Tracking Network System (CCTNS) available at the police stations. The linking of CCTNS with the aforementioned directories shall help the police match photo and address of the applicant.

4. Even so, at least for now, the online verification shall be followed up with physical verification by the local police.

However, the final aim is to transform the entire verification system into an online process, such that it becomes easier and quicker for the applicants.
