Selfless Delhi Cop Takes Bullet To Shield Young Colleague Who Just Became a Dad!

The national capital saw one of its biggest encounters in the last decade, as a thrilling gunfight ensued between the city’s most-wanted criminals and a special cell of police officers on Saturday in the Chhatarpur area.

Over four gangsters, including notorious criminal Rajesh Bharti were killed in the encounter.

In the same fight, sub-inspector Bijender Singh Deshwal emerged as a hero and won the respect of his fellow men in uniform after he put his own life in danger to save his younger colleague.

According to a report in The Times of India, the brave officer leapt into action using his own body as a shield and took a bullet to save 25-year-old head constable Gurdeep Singh. Singh had welcomed his newborn into the world only three months ago.

Another officer was credited to have saved the lives of the injured special squad members including Deshwal.

Sub-inspector Raj Singh was shot in the arm, yet he drove all six of his injured colleagues to a nearby hospital for immediate medical help.

Speaking to the publication, Deshwal’s son, Ashish, who works as a physiotherapist in Delhi said, “It was a moment of dual emotions. On the one hand, I was proud of my father’s action and bravery, but on the other, the family was worried as he had been shot twice. He has been with the special cell for 15 years and really loves his job.”

It was Ashish who got in touch with Akshay, SI Raj Singh’s son and told him to rush the hospital. Both their fathers have served in the special cell together for the last 15 years.

“Someone from my father’s team called me and said that my father had been shot in the right arm. I was later told that after the shootout he drove the car while wounded and took the others to a nearby hospital,” Akshay said.

The shootout was perhaps the most shocking for Komal Kadayan, a final year MBBS student at Safdarjung Hospital.

Why?

Because it was her first ever experience of treating a patient with gunshot wounds and she was going to be treating her father Krishan Kadayan, who was part of the special squad injured at the shootout site.

Recalling the horror, Komal told TOI, “My father left home at 4.30 am on Saturday citing some important work. In the afternoon, I received a phone call from him wherein he said he was coming to the hospital due to some accident,” Komal said. He was later taken to the AIIMS Trauma Centre where Komal joined the team at work.

Special Commissioner of Police (special cell) MM Oberoi and DCP (special cell) Pramod Kushwaha visited the officers recuperating in the hospital on Sunday and wished them a speedy recovery.

A total of eight special cell police officers were injured during the shootout. Head Constable Girdhar was shifted to a private hospital for treatment while the other four police officers continue to be treated at the AIIMS trauma centre. The remaining three have been discharged.

The bravery of each of these officers proves that men in uniform not only put their duty first but also the safety of their squad before their own lives. We salute their bravery!
