Mumbai Couple Serves Free Meals to 50 Destitute & Abandoned Senior Citizens

65-year-old Kishorebhai spent 45 years of his life setting up a successful business as a spice and jute trader.

Today, this Sector 29 Vashi resident along with his wife, 58-year-old Yogini, has begun a selfless journey to serve the needy, poor, physically-challenged and senior citizens.

Christened as the ‘Niradhar Tiffin Seva’, the couple has started a free-meal service that serves over 50 underprivileged citizens, mainly the elderly, who have been abandoned by their own families.

Speaking to The Times of India, Kishorebhai explains the motivation behind the initiative saying, “I encountered many of my friends and close acquaintances who are currently living a miserable life after being ill-treated, or worse, abandoned by their children. Their sad living conditions and the fact that they have spent their remaining days on an empty stomach haunted me to do something, however small.”

While the stories of the citizens around him motivated Kishorebhai to help these senior citizens, the concept of seva or service came naturally to his wife Yogini, he says.

The couple has a permanent cook (maharaj) who has been dedicatedly preparing food for the family at their functions and special events for years.

“We have given him a contract to cook for nearly 50 heads per day. Our home-delivered meal consists of roti, dal, rice, two curries, cucumber and buttermilk,” Yogini told TOI.

Kishorebhai explains how he now has a lot more free time at hand since his two sons and their wives have taken charge of the business. And therefore he wanted to spend this time meaningfully with his wife, for the service of society.

“My wife and I decided to spend my money for the poor, elderly persons who have been deprived by their near and dear ones,” he told the publication.

The couple was delighted when they received tremendous support from their family for their selfless initiative.

How does the initiative work?

The husband-wife duo has now created forms to register the names of people in need. Once they get any information about someone in need of the tiffin service, the couple visits them and verifies their eligibility. Once they are convinced that the person in question requires help, they register them and immediately start the tiffin delivery service.

The couple is looking forward to many more such needy persons around Vashi, Koparkhairane and Ghansoli.

The couple was travelling when The Better India reached out to them via WhatsApp.

But we salute their efforts to help underprivileged citizens who require it the most!

As Albert Einstein once said, “Only a life lived in service of others is worth living.”
