You Can Get a Glass of Clean Drinking Water at ₹2! Delhi to Soon Get 200 Water ATMs

In order to make clean drinking water accessible to people in public places across the city, various municipal corporations in Delhi are mobilising plans for installing water ATMs.

Currently in the process of identifying the sites, the plan has found approval from both the North and East Delhi Municipal Corporations, under which 200 water ATMs are touted for installation.

Expected to be placed at locations with heavy influx of people like market places, areas like Kamla Nagar, Gaffar Market (Karol Bagh), Model Town, Paschim Vihar and Pitampura in North Delhi, and Vikas Marg, Geeta Colony, Shahdara (old market), Mayur Vihar and Anand Vihar in East Delhi are most likely to get the water ATMs.

“As many as 100 sites have been proposed for water ATMs. Fifty of these machines would be installed in the first phase. We have invited bids from agencies, which have license of running water-cooling plants. They would be allowed to install water ATMs as per the new policy for water-cooling plant,” said Dr NR Dass, municipal health officer, East DMC to HT.

Reportedly, the North Delhi Municipal Commissioner, PK Gupta, had reached out to the deputy commissioners of all six zones for discussing various site details within a week’s span. “We have even written to the Delhi Jal Board, seeking their opinion on a proposal to supply water and install water ATMs in collaboration with us,” he said.

Dispensing a glass of water (250 ml) for ₹2, the machines are not only economically viable, but will also help in reducing the usage of plastic bottles.

Initially, it was the South Delhi Municipal Corporation that had launched the project as a pilot under which water ATMs were installed at 100 locations last month.

After finding tremendous response from the public, the agency plans on expanding the concept across the municipality and has invited tender for installation, commissioning, operation and maintenance of remaining 100 water ATMs.
