Woman Cop in Bihar Organised the Wedding for a Poor Girl Who Lost Her Father in a Road Accident

When a young Dalit bride-to-be lost her father in a tragic road accident, her mother turned to the only person she could think of to help the family in need – a police officer.

And that’s exactly how, on February 14, a day universally celebrated as the day of love, Benipatti subdivisional police officer (SDPO) Nirmala Kumari not only organised the wedding of 19-year-old Ruby, but also performed the formal kanyadan.

Ruby’s mother realised that she couldn’t arrange for her daughter’s wedding as her husband was the only earning member of the family and with his death, they couldn’t afford anything at all. That is when she approached Nirmala for help. With just days at hand, Nirmala ensured every last detail was in place for the big day.

The wedding took place also in part due to the generosity of local businessmen who chipped in with funds.

Speaking to Hindustan Times, Nirmala said, “The widow, a Dalit, had three children, with Ruby being the eldest. I assured her of help in getting Ruby married only if she could find a groom. On February 7, the widow told Nirmala that she had zeroed in on a boy, Ram Vivek, a plumber and son of a tea stall owner from Madhwapur village, also in Madhubani district.”

This meant the SDPO was in charge of fixing the venue, the menu, arranging for the bridal attire and everything else. In fact, Nirmala was so enthusiastic about her role in the wedding, that at one point she even serenaded the guests by singing a Bollywood number!

The occasion was especially auspicious for Ruby as she not only forged a permanent bond with her husband, but also welcomed another family member – Nirmala – as her didi (older sister).
