Farmer from Kerala to start dictionary of tribal dialects.

Kandamala Ramachandran belongs to the Kuruma tribe of Wayanad, Kerala. The 41-year-old farmer is on a mission to protect tribal dialects. Over the last decade, Ramachandran has travelled extensively across Kerala to research the oral languages of the Kuruma, Adiya, Paniya, Kattunayikka, and Oorali tribes.

He is now working on collating his research in the form of a dictionary. The words will be arranged as they are in a Malayalam dictionary. Each Malayalam word will be accompanied  with the corresponding words of each tribal clan.  The dictionary is expected to have about 5,000 words and will be more than 2,000 pages long. It will also be verified by scholars. Ramachandran hopes that his efforts will help protect these tribal dialects for future generations.

Preserving a rich cultural legacy, one word at a time.
