They say it takes a village to raise a child, and perhaps it is true. Around noon on Sunday, September 30, a tweet by the Telangana District Police Chief, Rema Rajeshwari, has been garnering a lot of appreciation on social media.

The written examinations for the position of police constable were being held at the Boys Junior College, Mahabubnagar. One of the aspirants – from an underprivileged background – came for the examination along with her four-month-old infant.

Head constable Mujib-ur-Rahman was the man of the moment. In a report published by NDTV, Rahman said, “She brought the baby to the centre, and a 14-year-girl was made in charge. But the baby kept crying. So I tried to cheer him.”
A 48-year-old father to two children himself, Rahman made sure that the child was taken care of, without causing trouble to the mother, who was writing the paper.
Rahman’s son is studying medicine in China and his daughter will finish school next year. He has worked very hard to ensure that he can provide his children with a quality education. He also told the publication, “We are here to serve the public. We are here because of the public. Nothing is more important to me.”

While the police force often gets criticised, this tweet saw so many replies commending Rahman’s action. One user commented, “Good to see positive side of police being shown. It is very much necessary to change the perception of people. Great initiative Madam. Hope it goes Pan India.”
Another said, “Rema how true! We have many human faces amongst we the police but just fail to appreciate them because it’s become a given to see them providing succour when it’s most needed.. It’s time we give them recognition!! proud of you to be recognising this as the leader!!”
