Google CEO Sundar Pichai was in India to launch key programmes that will help India’s small and medium business owners take advantage of the Internet to grow their businesses. As part of the initiative, Google will be rolling out a training programme that will train SMB (Small and Medium businesses) with the help of a website and an app.

This training programme called Digital Unlocked has been drafted in association with the Indian School of Business and Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI). It consists of online training, offline training and via-app training.

The online training contains 90 self-paced videos that can be accessed here. The tutorials cover a range of topics that will help the user learn about leveraging and using their web presence to expand their business and reach out to a new customer base.

The offline training will be taking place over the next three years with support from FICCI. According to a press release by Google, a total of 5,000 workshops will be held in 40 cities across India. Currently, people can sign up for the workshops online for Delhi, Jalandhar, Indore, and Bhopal.

An app called Primer was also launched. Offering bite-sized modules, the app will help users equip themselves with marketing skills. It is free of cost and Google promises that new lessons will be added every week.

Additionally, Pichai also showed the preview of a new website that will be launched later this year called ‘My Business Websites’. It will help SMBs create websites free of cost.

Here’s why these tools matter in the Indian landscape:

Currently, India has a whopping 51 million small and medium businesses. But only 32% of them are online. Helping SMBs will be ultimately fruitful to the Indian economy because they contribute to 37% of our GDP.

“The internet and digital technology will be an engine of growth for the Indian economy. Today, anyone can become an entrepreneur, a developer, or a creator, but it is important that they have the right tools and skills to digitize. We believe it is important for us to invest in training and equipping these individuals and small businesses to accelerate their journey of growth,” Sundar Pichai said at the event.
