Neeta Deswal, wife of Late Major Amit Deswal, is preparing to join the Indian Army as a tribute to her husband who lost his life in an insurgency operation in Manipur.
She plans to appear for the Army’s Service Selection Board (SSB) exam and is preparing for the interview to join the Officers Training Academy (OTA), Chennai.

“Initially, I was not sure about how to proceed with life after Amit’s death, but the Army has taken care of me and my son like family. This is why I have decided to join the Army. It would be a tribute to my husband,” Neeta told Indiatimes.
Major Amit Deswal, who belonged to Haryana’s Jhajjar district, was killed in April this year in a counter attack with militants when he was posted in Manipur as part of Operation Hifazat-II. Neeta was living with Amit in Jorhat, Assam at the time.
After his death, Neeta has been living in accommodation provided by the army in Delhi Cantonment, along with her 3-year-old son.
She started preparing for the exam and interview from the same coaching institute that her husband Amit had attended. Neeta is a graduate and worked earlier as a co-ordinator in a school near Jhajjar.

Although it is not yet official that Neeta will be appearing for the SSB exam this year, Amit’s father Subedar Rishi Ram (retd) said he is in talks with the commanding officer of 21 Para and other defence authorities.
The entire family is supportive of Neeta’s decision to join the army.
“We are proud of our daughter-in-law and support all her decisions. She has shown courage and determination after the tragedy. We are sure she will succeed in her objective of joining the Army,” said Rishi Ram.
