The Jammu & Kashmir Police, on their Twitter handle, posted the photo of a traffic constable who risked his life to save passengers under five feet of snow on the historic ‘Peer Ki Gali’ stretch along Mughal Road, which runs between Poonch and Shopian district.
While they did not reveal the traffic personnel’s name, the Press Trust of India reported that over 120 people were rescued from the same stretch as the region recorded its first heavy snowfall, mostly consisting of truckers.
Speaking to the Press Trust of India on Saturday afternoon, Deputy Superintendent of Police (Traffic) Mohammed Rafiq, who led the rescue operation in these parts, said, “A joint rescue operation was launched last evening after it was reported that over 70 vehicles, mostly trucks, were left stranded on both sides due to the heavy snowfall and subsequently over 120 persons were rescued and shifted safely to Surankote.”
Those rescued from the snow fell ill and were lodged into a government hospital accordingly. However, this wasn’t the only rescue operation in motion over the weekend with the police evacuating 700 stranded passengers on the Jammu-Srinagar national highway.
According to news agencies, this road is now open for traffic coming from Srinagar to Jammu following hours of authorities clearing the snow.
