Cancelled Your Rail Ticket? Now You Can Track Its Refund Status in Real-Time!

Worried about getting your money back after cancelling a train ticket? Unsure about the status of your refund? Well, you don’t need to worry any longer, as the Railway Ministry has launched a website, where consumers can monitor the status of their refund in real time.

All you have to do is log onto the website ‘www.refund.indianrail.gov.in’ and submit your Passenger Name Record (PNR) number.

“This facility is to promote transparency in the system and is extremely helpful for those awaiting refunds,” said a senior official of the Railway Board to the Press Trust of India (PTI).

Developed by the Centre for Railway Information Systems (CRIS), the website will monitor the status of your refund irrespective of whether of you bought the ticket online or over the counter.

This facility will mainly help those consumers who haven’t booked their tickets through the IRCTC website. They are compelled to submit claims with Ticket Deposit Receipts (TDRs) across ticket counters since that Is the only avenue available to them. Meanwhile, passengers who have booked their tickets on the official website, receive text messages or emails acknowledging that the Railways is processing their cancelled tickets and the subsequent refund status.

Consumers can cancel their train tickets on the IRCTC website, ticket counters and even dial the railway enquiry number 139. If a consumer cancels his/her ticket online and in the stipulated time period, the refund amount is credited to their account within five days.

If the consumer decides to cancel their ticket across the counter in the stipulated time period, the refund amount is deposited back into their account within seven days.

For Tatkal train ticket holders, however, there isn’t much scope for a refund on cancellation. Only if your train is running more than three hours late or is cancelled, can you claim a refund by filing a TDR.

For contingent cancellation and waitlisted Tatkal ticket cancellations, charges will be deducted as per existing Railway rules.

You can also cancel your Tatkal e-tickets partially.
