In another display of courage, a 19-year-old Kolkata girl jumped from a moving bus and not only chased down her phone snatcher, but also got him arrested.
A resident of Palta, Sanchari Saha is a second-year student at Barrackpore Rastraguru Surendranath College. She was returning home from college on the route 85 bus on Monday, April 2, 2018.
When her bus was passing Chiria More, one of her co-passengers alerted Sanchari, that a man alighting the bus had flicked her phone from her pocket.
When she asked the man, who appeared to be in his 30s, to return her phone, he was agitated. He refused and even threatened to harm Sanchari, saying she was falsely accusing him, a witness of the incident, Subir Biswas told the Times Of India.
It took her some time to get the man to accept his theft.
“But finally he gave in and got the phone from his shirt’s hidden pocket,” Subir added.
After procuring her phone from the man, Sanchari dragged him to the to Officer-in-Charge of Barrackpore Sub-Traffic Guard, Bijay Ghosh, and Assistant Officer, Kanchan Biswas.
The officers accompanied them to the local police station where Sanchari lodged a written complaint and got the accused arrested by the Titagarh police.
Sanchari recalled the incident while speaking to The Times of India saying, “I jumped off the bus and started chasing the snatcher while shouting for help. The locals and traffic cops rushed to my help, and I caught him.”

Her quick action and daredevilry seemed to have won the respect of the senior officers of the Barrackpore Commissionerate. Praising her, the officers expressed how fearless acts like Sanchari’s are helping curb crimes in the area.
“Police are trying their best to ensure the security of citizens. We always appreciate bravery. Such coordination helps us crack crimes faster,” Police commissioner Rajesh Singh told TOI.
We salute Sanchari for her grit and determination and hope that her story inspires many more women to take a stand when they are faced with similar situations.
