The Indian Railways have undoubtedly been an indispensable part of our lives since the time the first rail track was laid in the country.
Be it the daily commute via the metro or long-distance travel across the country, most Indians have practically grown up travelling through the national transporter much before flights became accessible and affordable for the common man.
Many of of us would have also had at least one train delay incident where you had either spent many hours waiting for your train, having no absolute clue about its status or reached the destination couple of hours later than intended!
Well, the Indian Railways has launched a new service on Saturday, under which all passengers travelling in Rajdhani and Shatabdi trains will receive text notifications on their mobile phones if their train is delayed for an hour or more.
“The SMS facility, which has already started functioning in all Rajdhani and Shatabdi trains, will soon be operational in all other trains in a phased manner,” said a senior Railway Ministry official involved with the project, to Economic Times.

In order to avail the facility, one needs to include his or her mobile number on the reservation slips. The passenger-friendly provision, which has been developed by Centre for Railway Information Systems (CRIS), is a free-of-cost service borne entirely by the Railways.
With an initial trial run on select Rajdhani and Shatabdi trains that intended to identify and fix glitches, the service is now functional in all the 23 pairs of Rajdhani and 26 pairs of Shatabdi trains running across the country.
