Kalpakkam Engineers Develop Sewage Treatment Plant 4 Times Cheaper Than Regular Ones

Nuclear engineers at Bhabha Atomic Research Center (BARC) in Kalpakkam now have another credit to their name apart being responsible for the country’s atomic reactors.

Using their spare time, the engineers have developed a compact, modular sewage treatment plant that is believed to be four times cheaper than the conventional ones.

According to the scientists, the plant’s treatment mechanism is superior in efficiency such that the treated water can be used readily used for gardening and irrigation purposes while occupying only a sixth of the space taken up by a regular sewage treatment plant, reports NDTV.

The interesting aspect of the plant in Kalpakkam apart from treating the sewage water faster is the incorporation of bio-films comprising bacteria that help in cleaning the sewage water and removes the Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD), nitrogen and phosphorous content.

“This technology relies on the growth of the micro-organisms, and it offers better treatment and a reduction in space required for the plant and also reduces operational and capital costs,” said Dr YV Nanacharaiah, who is one of the scientists who worked on the plant.

With the pilot plant already functioning in Kalpakkam’s BARC township, the scientists plan on scaling up the plant fit for a small municipality in the next phase.
