When Jayalakshmi left home on 25th September 2017, in an auto from at K. Pudur to reach Meenakshi Mission Hospital in Madurai, her 89-year-old father admitted in its cardiology department was the only thing on her mind.
The surgery had taken a severe financial toll on her family. After paying an advance of ₹25,000, she had mortgaged her gold for a loan of ₹79,000 for the surgery.
In her haste, she forgot the bag she had carried all the cash in after getting off the auto at the hospital. She realised just minutes later that the vehicle had left and so had the cash in the bag.
This was the money meant to save her father, and one moment of carelessness could cost him his life.
In absolute panic, she rushed to the security guards at the gate only to find that the auto-rickshaw was nowhere in sight. She consulted the hospital staff who advised her to approach the nearest police check-post.
Without wasting time, she rushed to the Madurai-Melur road police check-post near the integrated bus stand. She recounted the entire story of how she lost her bag to police personnel, John Paul.
He immediately alerted police control room and the K. Pudur police Sub-Inspector Pandi. He also got in touch with a two-wheeler patrol police in the vicinity.

A team from Pudur station arrived at the hospital. After checking the CCTV footage and spotting the auto, they noted down its details. Armed with the information, Mr Pandi, alongside his team contacted auto stands in Maatuthavani and Pudur areas.
The clock was ticking, and Jayalakshmi continued to be yelled at by her relatives. But it all ended on a good note, as Mr Pandi rushed to the hospital with the bag of cash, he procured from the auto driver, Vairamuthu, a report by The Hindu said.
With not a note touched or a rupee missing, the bag was restored back to its rightful owner.
Commissioner of Police Mahesh Kumar Aggarwal lauded the team for its quick action. But he also appealed to citizens to take extra care in public places concerning their belongings.
The auto stand office-bearer, Nagoor Hanifa at Pudur, Traffic SI Badusha Mohideen and others were rewarded for the commendable work, reported the publication.
