Bajai Jagtap, the head constable at Dahisar police station in Mumbai, had been deployed to guard a school in the city during the board exams when something caught his eye, or rather, his ear. He overheard a seminar in the one of classrooms where a person was talking about composting. Inspired, he quickly resolved to set up a composting unit at his own police station.
And he has done just that.

Bajai spoke to the Hindustan Times about the initiative saying, “I was guarding the main gate when I overheard the seminar. I liked the idea immensely. I approached our senior inspector and requested him to start a similar initiative at our police station as well. It is simple and doable for every citizen of the country. They just have to decide to do something good.”
Having pitched the idea and gotten permission from senior officials, the team in the station approached an NGO called Eco-ROX to set up a composting unit and help manage their waste responsibly. The organisation trained a few officers on how composting is done.
Now, the police station boasts its own composting unit that treats all the waste that comes from the police station’s canteen. About 4 kg of daily wet waste consisting of canteen food, flowers, and leaves get dumped to compost into a 3 by 2 compost box.

The NGO that helped set up the initiative calls it the waste-to-wealth project and the station is planning on using the treated waste as fertiliser.
The station is also hoping to set an example for the public in an effort to help everyone go green.
