While the World unites this month to applaud and celebrate feminine power, this poem by 24-year-old Bangalore-based poet Aparna Agarwal takes us on a ride. The month of March is usually dedicated to women for their incredible contribution in each of our lives, and comes as a annual reminder to build an inclusive world.
On one hand, where women are breaking barriers and raising the bar, the larger bunch is still stuck in the loop of patriarchy, societal taboo and stereotypes.
This hard-hitting poem on the eve of International Women’s Day comes as a gentle reminder to the birth of thoughts that look down upon women. In this age and time, where women are climbing the global pedestal, the societal stereotypes that take pride in judging women more for the clothes the wear, the time they return back home, and the number of male friends they have, are seeping deep down in their own morality.
Aparna, who is pursuing her Masters in Science, is an avid poet. She loves to travel physically, as well as through the magic of books. You’ll usually find her nose stuck in a book until she finds the nearest pillow. She firmly believes that the sword is mightier than the pen, but that doesn’t stop her from writing poetry that will cut you to the core. This poem is a gentle reminder to the society that has done more bad than good to women.
On this International Women’s Day, let’s take a firm foot to be the change we all want to see. To build an inclusive world where their safety is the priority. To celebrate, applaud, and gratify the presence of women in all our lives.
