Recently Saiha civil hospital in Mizoram found itself in a pickle. There was a woman who desperately needed surgery and the only the surgeon the hospital staffed was not available as he was away getting training. So, the hospital administration did the only thing they could think of – they called a politician to do the operation instead.
Thankfully the politician in question was MLA Dr K Beichhua, who knows a thing or two about surgeries, having been a veteran surgeon himself before swapping his scrubs for politics.
Not only did he immediately rush to perform the surgery himself, he was also able to save the woman’s life.

Speaking to Hindustan Times, Beichchua said, “I was informed that a 35-year-old woman was having severe abdominal pain and needed to be operated immediately. The woman’s stomach had a large perforation (hole) and if the operation had not been performed, she may have died.” Due to the efforts of Beichchua, not only did the woman survive but according to him in his last visit to see her, he found her happy and laughing.
Dr Beichhua joined the Mizo National Front (MNF) in 2013 after spending 20 years as a general practitioner. His wife incidentally is also a doctor who also has aspirations to join politics having contested in assembly elections in 2008 as an independent candidate.

This isn’t the first time in recent times a politician from the northeast region has dazzled the country with skills that have little to do with politics. Earlier this year, a video of Chief Minister of Meghalaya Mukul Sangma and Dr Donkupar Roy, leader of the opposition party, singing together at a wedding function went viral.
For now, Dr Beichhua is back to his day job but with a twist – he is spearheading efforts to address the shortage of trained doctors in the region, a fact he highlighted at a recent district development and coordination committee meeting.
This is one doctor who is always on call.
