As a pilot project, the plant will be set up in one of the hostel cafeterias at the institute. The biogas produced here will be supplied to hostels for cooking. With this project, the benefits of a biogas plant will also be demonstrated to villages and towns. Further along, the facility will be established in five villages adopted by NIT-T under Unnat Bharat Abhiyan scheme of the government.

The director in-charge of NIT-T, G Kannabiran, told The Times of India that the project will be funded by BARC while NIT-T will manage it and provide resources like space and skilled manpower for five years. The total cost of the project is Rs. 42,20,000.

NIT-T is the first institution in the state to sign a MoU for jointly establishing the DAE Technologies Display and Dissemination Facility (DTDDF) centre at NIT-T. The institution will also be promoting various technologies developed by BARC. The collaboration between the two leading institutions is expected to be on three levels: academic, research and outreach.

The DTDDF centre project has a wider reach and will involve demonstration and installation of various technologies in villages by NIT-T. BARC developed technologies such as Nisargruna (Biogas Plant), Soil Organic Carbon Detection Kit (SOCDK), Domestic Water Purifier (DWP), Foldable Solar Dryer (FSD), Vibro Thermal Disinfestor (VTD), and Fluoride Detection Kit (FDK) will be promoted and implemented in the due course of the project.
