The highly anticipated movie, Dangal, which is based on the success stories of Indian wrestlers Geeta Phogat and Babita Kumari, has helped bring the limelight on the needs of many women wrestlers across the country. In a welcome move, the Maharashtra State Wrestling Association (MSWA) has decided to work towards providing proper training to women.

The association will identify the Jog Maharaj Vyayamshala in Alandi as the main centre in the state to train women wrestlers for “Mission Olympics 2020 and 2024.”

According to The Indian Express, the resolution was passed at their recently held executive committee meeting in Pune. Situated in Ghundare Patil Nagar in Alandi, Jog Maharaj Vyayamshala is Maharashtra’s first residential wrestling school for girls. International wrestling referee Dinesh Gund established it in 2007.

Balasaheb Landge, the secretary of MSWA, told The Indian Express, “In November, a specially-appointed selection committee will select women wrestlers for sub-junior and junior categories. In the first phase, 36 women would be selected and trained. The selected wrestlers from this group will represent the state in the national championships.”

He also said that the selected wrestlers will be provided with free training along with accommodation and food. While the Vyayamshala will impart training, MSWA will provide financial support.

In October last year, the Sports Authority of India (SAI) adopted the Jog Maharaj Vyayamshala along with four other “akharas” based in Gurmandi (Delhi), Shahbad Daulatapur (Delhi), Hisar (Haryana) and Alipur (Delhi).
