Students of the Palaj Primary School are super excited and they have all reasons to be. They now have a library of their own in their own school, where they can get lost in the joy of reading for hours together.
In an initiative by Team Amalthea, a group founded by students of the second year B.Tech course at IIT-Gandhinagar, a library comprising over 100 books in English, Hindi and Gujarati has been set up at the primary school in Palaj village.
Started with the aim of cultivating a habit of reading among students at a very young age, the mini-library has over 100 books in categories of fiction as well as non-fiction. The school has around 250 students in the age group of 7 to 14.

Prateek Verma, a member of Team Amalthea, told Times of India, “Most of the books for the library have been collected by students from various donors. We will increase the number of books in the library in course of time. Course books including books published by NCERT will also be added to the library.”
According to the Times of India report, Amalthea members have made creative use of corrugated cardboard sheets to make tables, chairs and bookshelves for the library. “These sheets are easier to work on, light-weight and cheaper as compared to other materials. Moreover, corrugated sheets have amazing strength and also have a very long life,” Ranjan said.
With 12 chairs, 3 tables and 2 bookshelves, the library is all ready to become the kids’ beloved reading nook. This excellent initiative simply proves that we don’t always have to wait to be wealthy or powerful to do a good deed. We can start right where we are, with what we have!
