Green Products to Be Made from Construction and Demolition Waste in Indore

Waste generated at construction and demolition sites in Indore will soon be put to good use in an environment-friendly way, thereby reducing air pollution in the city. In a first-of-a-kind initiative in Indore, a processing facility to treat this waste will come up on four acres of land in Devguradia region. Operations at the plant will most probably begin from November.

The treated waste will then be re-used to make bricks, pavers block, chairs, and other green products.

The plant will be set up on public-private partnership (PPP). An Ahmedabad-based agency has received the tender for setting it up and Indore Municipal Corporation (IMC) will provide land and tipping fee to them. About 100 tonnes of construction and demolition waste is generated in Indore daily. IMC will provide about 75 tonnes of waste to the processing facility every day, after collecting the debris from different sites falling within the corporation’s limits. There will be no waste discharge from the plant and all the final products will be certified as green and eco-friendly by Indian Green Building Council.

“This will be the first plant in the state to process debris into useful green products. There is no such facility anywhere in the state and the processing plant will help in making a clean environment,” IMC’s waste management consultant Asad Warsi told The Times of India. He added that all the formalities are near completion and the agency will receive the work order in a fortnight.

According to reports, construction waste contributes to about 10 per cent of air pollution resulting in many respiratory problems because the dust and debris travel in the air for months.
