India to get its very own Gravitational-Waves Observatory

A gravitational-waves observatory is designed to measure the smallest of gravitational waves & the tiniest distortions in space-time.

Project LIGO is an advanced ‘Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory.’ The project recently got the Indian government’s nod & will soon be installed in India.

This will be the third such laboratory to ever be installed and the first one to be constructed outside the US. A third detector will expand the network of search allowing scientists to estimate the position of the sources of waves. This move will further boost India’s science & astronomy sector.

The plan is to make it operational by 2024.
